Associate Professor, UNC Greensboro
Mat is an Associate Professor in the Department of Social Work and a Faculty Director and Visiting Scholar with the Social Policy Institute at Washington University in St. Louis. He conducts research on financial security with a focus on lower-income households, including online tax-time savings, fin tech, small-dollar loans, financial counseling, the economic impacts of COVID-19 on U.S. households, the Earned Income Tax Credit, student debt and other topics. Prior to his academic career, he worked in and with nonprofit organizations serving low-income people and communities for several years. He received his MSW and PhD degrees from UNC-Chapel Hill.
